HEATING FOIL – a modern heating method

Heating foils are a modern solution in the field of heating. The heat emission process works on the principle of infrared radiation, making heating more efficient. The heating foil is actually a flexible radiator. It is made of high-quality carbon with specific properties and aluminum mass. Individual materials are applied in layers using an innovative solution associated with printing. These layers are responsible for the emission of infrared rays.

The base of the underfloor heating foil is PET foil. It is characterized by high resistance to mechanical damage and abrasion. Additionally, it is highly insulating and fire-resistant, making the entire system very safe. The heating foil is powered by a copper tape that is permanently connected to the electrical network. This heating method is controlled using a panel built into the wall.

How does heating foil differ from traditional heating? Infrared does not heat the air, as is the case in standard convector systems. Infrared rays heat the specific objects on which they are emitted. If a heating foil is placed under the panels, the floor finishing elements will be heated. Therefore, a ceiling heating foil placed on the ceiling under a layer of gypsum boards is also very useful. Unlike other systems, heat rays are first emitted towards the room and do not rise up.

Benefits of heating with heating foil:

The heating foil is a flexible, thin infrared electric heater. It is offered in various heating powers and widths. The heat and infrared generator is a mixture of graphite paste, the heating power depends on its density and proportions.

  • Low purchase cost

Heating foils are cheaper than most underfloor and central heating systems.

  • Service life

A good heating foil is resistant to damage and durable, which allows its service life to be estimated at one hundred years.

  • Minimal heat loss

Heating foils generate temperature in the place of heating, thus avoiding heat losses resulting from energy transfer.

  • Total automation

Modern heating foil does not require monitoring the filling of the fuel tank and temperature control, as is the case with standard boilers.

  • Accurate heating setting

The carbon heating foil reacts very quickly to changes in the desired temperature.

  • No radiator network

The 12V heating foil, powered by mains electricity, can be installed on walls and floors. Therefore, the installation of radiators, which are problematic in modern arrangements, is avoided.

  • Cheap operation

Modern underfloor heating foils consume half as much electricity as traditional heating mats.

  • No heating boiler

Mains power means that infrared heating foils do not require a boiler room, a central heating furnace or an extensive heating network.

  • No standard installation problems

When using heating foils, we do not have to worry about such duties as refilling the central heating network with water or bleeding it.

  • No problems with the chimney

Infrared heating foil does not require exhaust gas discharge, so regular seasonal inspections and chimney cleaning are no longer required.

  • Operational safety

Floor, ceiling or wall heating foil will not cause problems with carbon monoxide or improper exhaust gas discharge. Other standard problems associated with central heating boilers, such as the risk of fire or explosion, are also avoided

The use of heating foils in buildings

Another use of heating foil

The small thickness and ease of power supply make it difficult to find an area where heating foil would not be useful. Opinions from users confirm the enormous possibilities offered by this solution. There is no need to design a central heating network and install a heating boiler. Often, even the electrical network is not needed, as evidenced by the battery-powered 12V heating foil.

Infrared heating foil can be used as supporting heating for convector networks. Then you can place these radiators only in selected places particularly exposed to cold. This modern method can also be used as independent heating if the heating foil is selected appropriately. The total price of such an installation can often be much lower than the construction of a heating network and the investment in a solid fuel boiler.

The most popular solution used in most buildings is underfloor heating foil. This heating method can be used in residential buildings, offices or commercial facilities. The heating foil under the panels will make them warm to the touch. This will make it possible to move around the room barefoot, make it easier to play with your child on the floor, and influence the feeling of warmth throughout the room.

Underfloor heating foil works especially well in places where there are no permanent buildings and there is a large empty space. However, not all buildings have such conditions. An interesting solution is a ceiling heating foil. It involves placing the system under the ceiling. The installation is exactly the same as when laying the heating foil on the floor. The heated layer is most often covered with gypsum boards. Skeptical people say they are concerned about whether the room will be warm enough if heating foils are installed on the ceiling. However, the opinions of experts and users confirm that the infrared rays will heat the room, not the roof of the building.

Yet another area inside the apartment where infrared heating foils can be installed are the walls. There is no need to explain that this method is also effective enough. Installing systems on vertical parts of the structure also brings certain benefits. Heating foil can replace non-functional radiators and become invisible heating. The mat can be covered with plasterboards or ceramic tiles. Panels or wall paneling will not prevent proper heating.

Residential, office and commercial buildings are not the only places where heating foils can be used. Price, ease of installation and small dimensions encourage users to look for new applications. Floor heating foil can be a way to heat religious buildings, most often with cold stone floors. The foils can be placed under carpets, kneelers and even on benches and chairs. Thanks to this, heat will be generated exactly in the places where it is needed.

Underfloor heating foil is also often used in caravans that do not have their own heating. It can be placed in campers, campsites, gazebos or summer houses. Modern infrared heating foil is also often rolled out on shop windows, where it creates a barrier and protects against heat loss.

How to install heating foil yourself? - complete set

You can install the infrared heating foil yourself during finishing and renovation works. Our company makes this task easier by offering customers ready-made kits assembly. Thanks to the collected products and clear assembly instructions will run without any problems. The set includes:

  • TERMOFOL heating foil – a top quality product that can be used to heat any space,

FAQ

The most important parameter to pay attention to when choosing infrared heating foils is their power. The foil should be adapted to the size of the room for which the required unit thermal power is calculated in the design. TERMOFOL offers foils with several types of power expressed in W/m². Just choose the appropriate variant and match it to the design assumptions.

If the facility does not have appropriate calculations, you can independently estimate how much power the devices will need. It is worth remembering that all infrared heating foils have the same power consumption. The only difference is how quickly the room will be heated and comfortable. Therefore, it is worth choosing heating foils with higher power, the effects of which will be visible very quickly.

The next step during the purchase is to determine the amount of foil that will be needed. The best solution will be to cover the entire floor with infrared heating foil. You can subtract the space that will be covered with permanent construction, under which no foil is placed. It is not worth looking for apparent savings and laying the foil only on a part of the surface. This may cause the room to heat up slower, which will be especially troublesome during frosts.

An important aspect is also the selection of an appropriate thermoregulator that will be used to control the heating. It is permanently mounted in the wall, from where you can regulate the temperature. When shopping at TERMOFOL, you can use the advice of our experts who will help you choose the right thermoregulator for a given heating foil.

The heating foil, unlike classic cables or heating mats, heats the entire surface and not only locally through a high-temperature cable, so we can install it under any surface. The heating foil uses 50% less electricity than a traditional heating mat.

We only install the heating foil under furniture that has legs that are at least 3 cm high. Installation under permanent structures, e.g. under kitchen furniture or wall units, is prohibited.

The heating foil is a safe product and has been tested by research units accredited by the European Commission.

The heating foil is a stand-alone system that guarantees heat when used as the only heat source.

Electricity consumption depends only on the building’s insulation. Based on the data contained in the document whose name is the building’s energy performance, we can determine the actual operating costs.

It is forbidden to combine foils of different strengths.

Yes. You can freely combine different foil widths with the same rated power (xx/m2).

The warranty for heating foils installed by an Authorized Installer is 15 years, and in the case of self-assembly, 6 years.

The product lifespan is 100 years.

The heating foil should be selected based on design data. If you want to choose the product yourself, in the case of well-insulated, new buildings, a foil with a power of 80W/m² will be appropriate, for medium insulation – a foil with a power of 140W/m², and for poorly insulated buildings – a foil with a power of 220W/m².

The substrate should be dry and even. Insulation should be applied to the concrete layer and the heating foil will be installed on it.

The type of heating system depends on the material that will be used to finish the floors. In the case of a direct system, you can finish the floor using floor panels suitable for underfloor heating. If you want to use glued floors, you must choose an accumulation system and finish the floors after the screed dries.

Installation by an Authorized Installer is a guarantee of a properly constructed system and a longer manufacturer’s warranty – 15 years. An authorized installer undergoes annual training and is able to properly select and install our products.

Infrared heating foil, or heating foil, is a high-quality product that will work in almost every case. It is ideally suited as surface heating, with particular emphasis on underfloor, ceiling and wall heating. It can be safely said that the quality of workmanship combined with wide functionality makes it irreplaceable in its field.

The heating foil works based on the electrical resistance of carbon. Infrared heating foil consists of carefully selected carbon and aluminum paste applied using modern technology (printing technique) to PET foil. This material is characterized by excellent insulating and fire-resistant properties. The PET foil was secured with a special LAMINEX foil. The copper tape electrode acts as a conductor of electric current, while the silver tape provides protection against sparking.

Heat is generated using electrical resistance on special graphite heating belts. The heating power depends on the distance between the above-mentioned strips, the width and the amount of graphite used. Heating foils with a relatively low power are perfect for alternative heating (the comfort of a warm floor), and with a higher power as a basic heating system.

Our offer includes many different models of heating foils, differing primarily in power – from 80 W/m² to even 400 W/m². Weaker solutions, although they perfectly cover the demand for thermal power, are characterized by a relatively significant time delay (longer waiting time to obtain the set parameters). We personally recommend stronger heating foils (from 140 W/m²) in the case of which the time delay is small, which translates into maximum thermal comfort in the room. NOTE: Regardless of the thermal power, the energy demand is the same. The only difference is the heating time and the electricity consumption is the same! Underfloor heating using foil with higher power reaches the set temperature faster, while with lower power it takes more time to bring the surface layer to the appropriate temperature. The speed of temperature increase also depends on the amount of coverage of the heating surface – the greater the percentage of floor coverage, the waiting time to reach the set temperature will be shorter. The comfort of using the heating foil in a surface heating system depends largely on the electronic temperature controller. Our offer includes both standard models – with a temperature setting function and a simple security system, as well as technologically advanced models – with a touch display, a wide personalization mode and compatible with remote control systems. In the case of advanced products, the user has the opportunity to choose the most effective control system, perfectly suited to his needs. NOTE: Before purchasing a heating foil, ask about European tests and check the security of the heating foil! Weaker solutions, although they perfectly cover the demand for thermal power, are characterized by a relatively significant delay time (longer waiting time to obtain the set parameters).

The selection and installation of foil in surface heating systems is simple and almost non-invasive. However, there are several key issues that should be paid attention to, both when designing and installing. The basic mistake that can be encountered when creating a heating foil system design is the use of a model with too low unit power. This may result from an incorrectly estimated demand for heating power. Apart from the obvious underheating of the rooms, the time it takes for the temperature to reach the set level (or close to it) will be longer than in a properly sized installation.

The use of a thermoregulator with a contact of too low power (in terms of the power handled) may damage the actuating elements, which results in a failure of the heating system – no heating. The installed heating foil should not exceed 80% of the permissible power of the thermoregulator.

Wall heating guarantees even temperature distribution over the entire height of the room. It is characterized by a lack of air circulation due to heat being released into the room through radiation. The wall finishing elements include plasterboards without or with finishing, laminated boards, wall panels. Ceiling heating is installed where underfloor or wall heating is not possible due to the lack of free space, e.g. a large amount of built-up floor, thick carpet or built-up wall.

Our offer includes Heating Foil with a power of 400W/m2 which can be used to create your own radiator. By installing the heating foil under plasterboard or natural stone, we will get a radiator with low electricity consumption, high efficiency, and thanks to the use of a thermoregulator, we will have full control of the operating temperature and our radiator will consume approximately 30% less electricity in relation to power.

Using a heating foil under the mirror ensures that the mirror will not fog up and, in addition, our mirror will turn into a radiator.

Foil powered by direct current is ideal for heating caravans and summer houses where we do not have access to the electricity network. This system can be connected to a battery or directly to photovoltaic panels.

Balcony and shop windows are the surfaces that generate the greatest heat losses. By installing a strip of Heating Foil in this area under the floor, we build a barrier curtain that will limit the inflow of cold air. This function serves as an underfloor heater.
